Caring for your
fresh flowers
1. To keep your flowers fresh we have wrapped the base of the stems in wet fabric.
2. Carefully remove the bouquet from its sleeve/ wrapping.
3. Cut away the bands holding the bags and cloth at the base of the stems.
4. Put some water in your vase following the instructions on the packed of flower food provided.
5. Remove any foliage that may be under the waterline as this rots in the water.
6. If your bouquet contains roses
carefully peel away the outer guard petals.
We and the growers leave these petals on to protect the flower heads
during transit.
7. Cut off the ends of the stems at a 45° angle and arrange the stems in your vase.
8. If you have received a hand tied bouquet, simply cut the stems at a 45° angle.
Place the bouquet into the water as the stems have been
arranged for you.
Hand tied bouquets are taped tightly.
If you have a bigger vase and want a larger looking display, cut away the tape!
9. Place your flowers away from
draughts, direct sunlight and heat sources.
The cooler the environment the longer your flowers will last
10. Replace the water after three
or four days and re-cut the stems - this will keep
your flowers fresher and help
them last longer!
Why you should cut the stems ...........
When you cut yourself and bleed
after a little while the blood will dry to form a scab.
This stops germs and dirt getting into the cut.
In the same way when
flower stems are cut after a little while the stem end will scab
over.
This scabbing prevents water and food from travelling up the flower stem.
To assist with the water
uptake, all bouquets made by us are kept in water
and flower food until they are packed.
The stems are covered with
an absorbent cloth which is soaked in water and flower food.
Upon receiving your flowers it is still a good idea to re-cut the stems
to help with water absorption.
If you do not cut the stems a
'scab' may have formed stopping water uptake.
Cutting at a 45° angle enlarges the surface area of the cut
thereby allowing more water to travel up the stem.
Why you should use the flower food provided...............
There are three types of flower
food available for cut flowers -
Professional 1, Professional 2 and Professional 3.
Each grade of flower food
is dissolved in water to create a food for the flowers.
Each food has differing levels of chemicals to help your flowers
flourish.
Professional 1 is user by
the growers and nurserymen.
As soon as the flowers are cut this food solution hydrates the stems
but the food is weak and so it does not encourage flower head development.
As soon as the flowers are received by us, we cut the stems and
place the flower stems in Professional 2 Solution.
This provides the flowers with a little more food to assist in bud
development.
Inside the small sachets we
provide with all our bouquets
is a powder of flower food which is essentially Professional 3 powder.
When mixed with water this powder helps to fully develop the flower
heads
providing food and nourishment.
By using this powder you are continuing
the care afforded to the flowers by us and the growers.
If the flower food is not used then food is not being taken up by the
flowers.
Water gives the flowers a drink but the food helps them develop into
beautiful blooms.
As well as food, the flower food
powder contains ingredients to prevent the development
of bacteria caused by rotting vegetation.
It is actually this bacteria which is responsible for a poor vase life.
It is important to use your flower food sachets to encourage flower
development and longevity.
