Floral Design
Even the
best flowers and foliage can look positively 'wrong' simply because
no thought has gone into the design of the display.
Generally design means considering three basic principles before you
begin:
outline and form; harmony (colour and setting); and balance and
scale.
The shape
of an arrangement depends largely on the flowers and foliage
your are using as well as the shape and size of the container. Tall
stems and foliage usually
establish the outline or height of the display, while bold flowers
or full blooms
very often form the focal point, or the centre, of the arrangement.
Other foliage and flowers
are used to fill in the outline, and contrasting colours or textures can
be recessed into the
arrangement to give depth. The angle from which the arrangement is
to be seen will
also affect the shape of the finished display - whether it is a table
centre to be
viewed from all sides or a front facing display as placed in a
fireplace.
Another thing to consider is the aim of the arrangement for example
a table centre
for a dinner party needs to be low so your guests can speak to each other
over the top of it!
Harmony is
really self explanatory. Look at the colours; do they
contrast?
Or are they toning shades of similar colours? In what or on
what will the display be seen -
don't put a yellow bouquet in a pink room - use pink blue and purple
shades instead of
yellow orange and reds and vice versa with a yellow room.
The setting of any display i.e coffee table, entrance hallway, guest
bedroom or kitchen or wherever,
is of vital importance. A small 'posy' in a delicate container would
be utterly lost in a large room.
So think of the position of the display, the lighting in the room etc.
Above all
the display should be well balanced - looking neither top heavy nor
lopsided.
The shape can be a traditional symmetrical design, or a more free-flowing
or random one.
Before you start an arrangement, decide on the type of display you
wish to
create whether it is to be symmetrical or asymmetrical, triangular,
round or semi-circular.
Think ahead
about how the flowers will be positioned to best balance each other
and avoid putting large blooms above smaller, delicate stems - this makes
the arrangement
look top heavy.
These are basic guidelines and you don't have to follow them.
At the end of the day, so long as you are happy with the design then its
perfect!
