Fluctuating Flower Prices
Flower prices on the Dutch auction and
throughout the nurseries and wholesalers
tend to fluctuate on a daily basis. Some days the prices come down
and some days
they go down marginally - a few pence here or there.
On other occasions prices for certain goods rise so much it makes our
buyer worry
to a point of exhaustion!
These large fluctuations are associated with the three main flower
giving occasions in the year
- namely, Christmas, Valentines Day and Mothers Day.
But there is ultimately one main reason why prices fluctuate and
that is
the main underlying market force of 'Supply and Demand'.
During the summer months it is generally easier
for the growers to provide fresh flowers for us.
The weather is good and this promotes luscious growth during the normal
growing months.
However last year 2006, Britain and Europe were hit by a heat-wave.
This resulted in the growers having to irrigate their crops more
than normal and
vent the vast greenhouses where the flowers were grown.
This extra work in venting and watering put up flower prices.
Generally speaking flower prices in the summer
and autumn are relatively cheap and stable.
However, with the onset of winter and Christmas looming flower
prices start to creep up.
In the weeks before Christmas, key stock can double - which is a
real nightmare for those of us
who are trying to make a living and give our customers good value for
money.
Certain products command highest prices and most of the time the
price is dependant on
the colour of the flowers.
Of course mention Christmas and immediately the colour red springs to
mind,
and and to lesser extent green and gold.
Very few of us think of pink or lilac or yellow as Christmas colours.
As a result the price of red flowers goes through the roof, whilst
you can pick up a bargain
if you want yellow, white or pink!
Straight after Christmas in the flower calendar
is Valentines Day
where - you've guessed it - red is still the number one colour.
This is further complicated by flower specie. Roses being the
key flower at Valentine's day
and well - RED ROSES! We all know how much they cost!
Hot on the heals after Valentine's Day is
Mother's Day or more traditionally Mothering Sunday.
Pink is certainly the colour here with any flower you can think of that is
pink
suddenly doubles in price whereas the red roses suddenly become
undesirable and therefore their price lowers.
White is the next colour to command a higher
price.
Churches at Easter are traditionally decorated in white lilies.
We have been supplying 200 stems of white lilies to the local
Catholic Church for the past 10 years
- and this is one small church in a small town!
Multiply this factor across the world and you will understand that white
lilies at Easter
become very expensive.
The white theme continues throughout the summer. There are
more weddings
in the summer than at any other time of the year. A
traditional bride will be wearing white
with white flowers.
However, the new trends for wedding flowers are introducing bright
and funky flowers.
In Britain Mother's day is a different day to
around the rest of the world.
So when its Mothers Day in America and Europe the pink flowers in Britain
go up too
as the growers target supplies to Europe and America
causing a shortage in Britain and so...the price goes up.
We are Flower Delivery UK change our prices to
suit availability and seasonal variation.
As I type this, my colleague is reducing our prices as this mornings
flowers
(two days after Valentine's Day) were cheaper to buy than two days before
Valentine's Day.
Prices fluctuate, but we try and keep things as steady as possible
but sadly we do have to adjust accordingly.
But - we have to say - we are not afraid to drop our prices when
flower costs come down!
