Hand Tied Bouquets
Hand-tied bouquets have become
very popular over the last few years to a point that we
at Flower
Delivery UK don't supply anything else.
One of our florists who has
been with us right from when we first opened
our flower shop in 1995
and is still with us twelve years later is still
producing
hand tieds for our website customers. She has, we estimate, produced
about 15,000
- so many that she can make them in her sleep!
(Very
useful around Valentines Day and Mothers Day!)
Once you have mastered the
basics a hand tied bouquet isn't too difficult
to make and can
transform a simple bunch of flowers into a work of art.
Hand-tieds have become
increasingly popular as the recipient does not have to arrange the
flowers
- this has been done for you.
But if the recipient
wants to arrange them herself,
the bouquet can be untied too.
We at Flower Delivery UK also have an option to purchase a simple
vase
to go with your bouquet - these are the exact size and shape to
take your hand-tied bouquet.
Below is a simple guide on how to create your own hand-tied bouquet.
Firstly choose some flowers and
foliage. Longer flowers with sturdy stems work best such as
chrysanthemum, roses, carnations, alstroemeria, hypericum berries,
solidago,
germini or leucadendron - along with some foliage like
bear grass,
or eucalyptus and to finish some leatherleaf.
You will
also need some string or florists tape to tie the stems at the ends.
Firstly strip off any excess
foliage along the length of the stems clearing about
the bottom 75%
of the length, then lay out the stems, specie at a time, along your
table.
Start by taking a few stems of
foliage and hold them in your left hand a couple
of inches below the
leaves.
Take a larger feature flower and feed this through the
middle of the foliage.
Now one by one pick up a stem and add
it in a spiralling shape to the stems in your hand.
As you add
a stem, turn the bouquet a fraction as this will create the spiral.
Flowers need to be added at an angle of about 40 degrees as this
also emphasises the shape.
Keep adding foliage and flowers
working the into the spiral shape.
The bottom of the stems
should be fanning out and the flower heads should either be at the
same height or slightly lower around the edges depending upon the
finished effect that you want.
When all the flowers have been
added finish the bouquet with about 7 stems of leather leaf
foliage.
The bouquet should now be filling your fist.
Now comes the slightly tricky bit...tying it off.
Without
letting go, wind string around the stems just above your fist.
We use sticky florist tape as its easier to fix. Now trim the
ends of the stems so they are the same length.
This along with the
spiral shape will allow the bouquet to stand upright.
The actual
length of the bouquet is up to you but should be in proportion with
your vase .
Pop the finished bouquet in a vase of water and flower food and
place the whole work
of art in a prominent place - stand back and admire.
It might not look perfect the
first time but with a bit of practice
you'll get the hang of it - but you've still got a long way to go to
catch up with Vicky's 15,000.
